Bird Watching in Ecuador - Samai Center

There are over 1600 bird species in tiny Ecuador, over double the species found in the continents of North America or Europe. From the awesome white collared King vulture to the diminutive hummingbird, the selection is almost endless and it is a true birdwatchers paradise.

At Samai in the heart of the Chongon Colanche mountains said to possibly be the most diverse bird watching on the planet, you will enjoy the wide varieties of Fly catchers, Trogons, Tanagers, Finches and parrots among many others.

" Birds have ever been the symbols of our highst aspirations. As divine messengers. symbols of our yearning for the heavens, or avatars of glorious song and color, they have stirred our imaginations from the first moment we looked into the sky. Whether as the Christian dove or Quetzalcoatt - the Aztec Plumed Serpent or in Plato's visions of the human soul growing wings and feathers, religion and philosophy have looked to birds as representatives of our better selves, that part of us not bound to earth.

Birds appear again and again in mythology, in folks and in literature. They've been omens, allegories, disguises and guides; they've been worshipped, eaten, feared and loved. They provide endless delights.

The feathered tribes one of the intriguing artistic forms that humanity has created to represent its soul."

From: The Bedside Book of Birds by Graeme Gibson.
